When it comes to high performance leads for motorcycles we are fussy!
Most throw away spark plug leads from your local auto mart feature carbon granule cores and/or spiral wound copper conductors. These leads are fine for your commuter car but are fragile and have a limited life. They do not stand up to open weather, wind buffeting and vibration that motorcycle leads are subjected to.
Because we found it increasingly difficult to purchase performance race quality leads in New Zealand we now manufacture our own motorcycle race leads from the finest components.
With modern high voltage ignition coils, insulation is more important than ever. It’s very common to upgrade the coils on a vehicle and get a degradation in performance because the spark plug leads begin shorting to earth due to poor jacket and boot insulation performance. We wanted a tough spark plug lead with exceptionally good insulation that would provide optimal performance for years.
All of our spark plug leads are a laminated construction incorporating fibreglass fibres sandwiched between two layers of silicon insulation.
For long life, insulation at high temperatures there is only one material, Silicon.
All of our spark plug leads use 100% silicon for the very best high temperature long life insulation. (Designed to withstand temperatures up to 315º Celsius). Even our low profile spark plug caps are made from pure silicone (choice of 90 degree, 135 degree and straight boots).
And because a thicker 8mm lead offers better jacket insulation than a 7mm lead. Our spark plug leads are 8mm.
Because Silicon on its own lacks mechanical strength, we have selected a laminated spark plug jacket construction which fiberglass strands between the two layers of silicon insulation.
One of the most common failure points on a spark plug is where the end fittings meet the cable. On older leads it is common to see corrosion and ‘burn back’ where the spark plug or ignition coil meets the copper core of the spark plug lead.
To reduce the possibility of this happening the copper conductors in our leads are tinned.
It’s preferable that this tinned layer on the copper conductor is not compromised by a screw in fitting. Our low resistance (non-suppressed) leads use crimped on connectors, rather than the screw in style.
Our crimped on spark plug and coil fittings have a vibration proof, spring locking rings to ensure they stay fixed on your spark plugs and ignition coil terminals.
